How to form correct sentences – basic grammar

This quick table will help you understand and quickly grasp how to form sentences in different tenses. When in doubt, refer to this handy table to form the right sentences! Here is how to use the table –

Let us say the verb is “go”. The second form is “went”. The third form is “gone”.

Simple past – I went to the park.

Simple present – I go to the park every Monday.

Simple future – I will go to the park tomorrow.

Past perfect – I had gone to the park.

Present perfect – He has gone to the park.

Future perfect – He will have gone to the park by now.

SIMPLE

second form of verb – waited, did, gave, slept, woke, took etc

Base form of verb – I do, you do, he does, she does, it does, they do, we do

Will/shall and base verb – I shall do, you/they/we will go, he/she/it will take

CONTINUOUS

Was/were + ing form of base verb – going, coming, waking, travelling, using, doing etc

Am/is/are + ing form of verb – I am going, you/we/they are going, he/she/it is going

Will be + ing form of base verb – I will be going, you/we/they will be going, he/she/it will be going

PERFECT

Had + third form of verb – had gone, had taken, had done, had made, had met etc

Have/has + third form of verb – I/we/you/they have, he/she/it has

Will have + third form of verb – I will have taken, She/he/it/they/you/we will have seen

PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Had been + ing form of verb –

Had been going, had been taking, had been doing etc

Has/have been + ing form of verb – he/she/it has been doing, I/we/you/they have been doing

Will have been doing (not used)
