In the US, a non-profit is a tax designation that indicates that an organization has met IRS requirements. The IRS has a website to verify whether the organization has maintained its status and IRS approval.

A not-for-profit is a claim that an organization is not distributing profits to shareholders. A not-for-profit can apply for non-profit status.

Both organizations generally have paid workers and board members often earn compensation. An IRS nonprofit discloses the names and salary+benefits of its most highly compensated board members and employees in a 990 tax filing, which can ve found on websites, such as Propublica and Guidestar. Religious institutions can opt out of filing the 990.
